La Reina || Writer's Wednesday: A Long Way to Go

As many of you have read before, I have been writing since I was eleven years old. I mean that's no reason to get a medal or something but because of that I have been too fond of writing as many stories as I can. As time went on, the stories I've written have been put to the side, never to be written on again. But even though they didn't have a future to completed, I kept them for memories sake and for a good laugh. Overly descriptive scenes such as "her hair was dark black." was one of the good ones that me and Mom have laughed at.

Yes, my stories have improved as I've grown older but never have I just thought, "this story is good the way it is, let's publish it!" No, I know that there is a process with editing and making sure the story is readable for others. Such is the case with Take Two & Call Me In The Morning. It's by the the largest story I've written and the first that I have started from the beginning with and kept going on. I haven't had anybody really edit it because I wanted to finish it first before sending it out but Courtney and Kalyn have been reading it as I have been writing it. It wasn't really an issue to get it edited right away, but I wanted to see if somebody would mind reading it anyway other than my cousins.

I have friended a couple of published writers on Facebook. Not so much to help with my writing but because they were fellow writers. I had asked a writer I really was a fan of to read my story. She had accepted, but the way she had chatted with me turned off any other communication with her for future references. It kept me from trying again until a couple of days ago when I put out a message to the author LeTeisha Newton.

I knew she was busy with deadlines for her own writing and she was pretty nice to even take the time to chat with me. I told her about reading my story and she told me that if she was interested in it at all that she would take the time to help me with it. I sent her the first four chapters of Take Two and waited anxiously to see if she would respond back.

She did. Oh boy, she did!

She sent me back a edited version of my story and told me that she couldn't even get past page one because there were so many errors in it. I wasn't surprised in the least and you know what, I didn't even let it get me down. Why? Because I already had it in my mind that my novel was going to be edited so why not just keep a copy of my rough draft for my own feel good memories and just let it be put the way it needs to be for other readers to enjoy.

She told me I needed work on grammar, the story itself and all in all told me I have a long way to go. I was so pleased to hear her say that because truthfully I have been feeling like my writing wasn't as good as it could be. That things I had learned in high school so long ago were starting to leave my mind. With her telling me this, it has given me the boot on my butt that I needed to keep going and improve.

So where do I go from here? I keep finishing my rough drafts. Then I look for an alpha reader to help me with more of them, a beta reader for my finished rough drafts and then a critique partner for future times.

There is quite a journey to go but I think I'm even more prepared than before!

La Princesa || First Day of Pre K!

I just can't believe it...the day that we have been anticipating for months has come. La Princesa had her first day of school as a pre-kindergartner. Weeks and weeks of being worried if she would even be accepted (you have be eligible in our school district) had finally paid off!

First off we had a meet the teacher night last week where Sofia got to see her classroom and meet her new teacher. After a mix up of classrooms we finally made it to Mrs. Lebeouf's class. She was so sweet to Sofia; getting down to her level, giving hugs and get this...she and I went to middle school and freshman year together. It's a small world after all!

This is Sofia's classroom! So adorable and so convienient too. They have a bathroom inside of the classroom so the littles don't have to go and walk by themselves to the potty. I love it. They also eat breakfast in the morning which is good cause we pretty much rush to get out of the they door. We're not used to having to get ready for school much any more. (derp)

Mrs. L and Ms. Brown
Sofia took to the class really quickly, grabbing toys and trying them out. She was really comfortable so I didn't think she would have any problems on the first day. Actually she didn't want to leave meet the teacher night and I had to explain to her that she would be back on Monday. How adorable is she?

Very blurry photo of all three of us

We kept La Princesa interested in school by telling her that it was on Monday over the weekend. Also explained to her about rules and how to share. So on the day of school, she was super ready. We got up way early at 6:45 which is so much earlier than what she's used to, but she got up without crying or complaints. I love this girl. Since Juan doesn't work on Mondays, we all went together as a family. She made it in time to get some breakfast (even though she already had cereal) and I snapped some photos.

Sofia didn't even cry and surprisingly, neither did I. Maybe I was just too proud of her for not doing so. I kissed her goodbye and all she said was bye before getting to her breakfast. We left her and hung around at the house until 10: 45 when we got her. Sadly we were the last parents to pick up because we thought it was at that time when it was earlier at 10:30. Lesson learned. She had a great time and I know that she's going to do so good.

She's going to take kindergarten by storm!

Did any of you mommies have to let go of your babies for school? How did you take it?

La Reina || To Be This Age Again For A Week

Me and my cousin Christopher

I know...the title is a bit vague. What age exactly?

I know you all are going, "Brittney, of all the ages to chose from in your thirty years, why six?" Because when I truly think hard about it, when I was six was when I can say I was truly the most happiest in my life.

* I lived with my mom along with my aunt, my two cousins Audia and Christopher and my grandmother in a townhouse (the same townhouses that my mom and grandmother moved to actually). With so many people under one roof, there was never a dull day! It was so nice to be surrounded by my family then.

* School was easy. 1st grade was so fun and I had the best teacher, Ms. Wells. How I remember her name is beyond me. I also remember the holiday and popcorn parties, the storytelling time in class and of course as I wasn't a complete angel in school, the color coded cards which I tried so hard to keep green. Sometimes they were yellow..meh. I hope Sofia isn't destined for that same color.

*Playtime was 10x more fun at six. Barbies, baby dolls, imaginative games and omg the shows were so much more excellent than the cartoons they play now. The Little Mermaid television show anyone? Christmas time was more exciting too. It seemed like Christmas break was so much longer but I guess when you're a kid everything is longer and bigger, huh?

The more and more I think about it, this decision for this age just makes the most sense to me. What about you? What age would you want to be again for a week and why?
