Getting to Know the Queen (Confessional Friday)

It's really late...but I didn't get a chance to do my Confessional Friday as I had to celebrate my hubby's birthday! He's 29 today and still looking sexy! I love my spicy burrito! But this Confessional Friday is different and it's getting to know me. I know that I do To-Know-Me Tuesdays so you can know more about me as well, it there is never enough opportunities to know somebody and so I have no problem doing this link up!

My name is Brittney P. Ortiz and I'm 28, born on July 17, 1985. I'm an all right person I guess. I like me. It takes me a little bit to warm up to you but when I do...watch out cause I'm a goofball and I will do anything to make you laugh.

I live in Ft. Worth, TX in this beautiful house right here. Please know that our grass looks nothing like that right now! But we'll be changing it soon enough. I was born in Texas and have only ever lived in one other state as a child: Louisiana. But I'm a Texas sweetie and hopefully will always stay that way. But you never know...the Lord might have another plan for us.

Me and my husband, Juan

Me and my Boodah Bear

I'm currently a stay at home mom to my little munchkin Sofia and honestly I love it this way. Being close to Sofia all day while working on my writing is like a dream to me. Things are going to have to change however as my hubby needs a bit of help with the bills and the house.

I have a huge family as does Juan. So much so that I won't be able to put them all on this post...you can see them on their family profiles as I make them. But generally speaking, other than Juan, Sofia and myself, there is my mom, Tracy. She gets her own area here because she's so awesome and because she lives with us in our house.

My mom as you can see is stylish and full of charisma. She knows everything about me and is my best friend. Currently she is a certified etiquette teacher and also a blogger like me at Silver Fox Style. I came close to losing her two weeks before Sofia was born to a severe asthma attack. As a result I'm always trying to make sure she's ok...

(l to r:) Chapo, Armida, Carmelo, Mike, Mom, Daniel, Juan Jr. Juan Sr. Me
Eva, Ruben, Sofia, Alicia, Martha, Jorge and Dad
This is majority of my family and familia together...and that's missing people! There are so many more!

I am a writer and have been for a long time. I currently write multicultral erotic romance. Yeah...that's right...that Fifty Shades stuff. I currently have a novel I'm writing on called Take Two and Call Me in the Morning that I'm really proud of as I don't normally write from beginning to end. I take that as a good sign.

I started writing this blog at first because I wanted people to know about my life. But as my pregnancy with Sofia progressed, I started ignoring my blog. Fast forward to now...and I have given my blog a new look and a new name as I'm trying to live my life to fullest while balancing two cultures. I'm in love with my blog and in love with reading other lifestyle blogs. I love that everybody has a story to tell.

Here's more random things about me:

- I have Aspergers Syndrome and was diagnosed when I was 15. Because of that I take pleasure in things that are more so too immature for people of my age and I'm socially awkward with people my age and older. If you have seen the fan boards on my Pinterest, hopefully this will explain them.

-I went to Disney World when I was 21 with my mom. It was that or Jamaica. I picked the right choice!

-Speaking of Jamaica, I went there with Juan when I turned 25.

-I can't stand to sleep with socks on.

-I love food. A lot.

-My favorite animals are lions, followed by polar bears and Clydesdales.

-I'm a late owl...but still am able to get up in the morning thanks to my little human alarm clock.

-I have a weird phobia where if I see things in bunches, I freak out. (think ants in a smushed antpile)

-I have a younger sister and brother. I barely know my brother.

-I don't have a drivers license. Hopefully this year that will change.

-I love making new friends.

-I love the show Grey's Anatomy.

So that's pretty much me in a nutshell! Hope you enjoyed...now it's off to bed for me! I'm exhausted.

On a special note though: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY KING! I hope you didn't think I forgot you! Muah!

Some Things I Have Learned About My Mexican Familia

When I first started going out with Juan in 2010, as you can imagine...I had no idea about his culture or what his family is used to. I slowly started learning the ways. These are just some things I have seen or realized in the nearly five years we have been together.

1. Mi  familia celebrates Christmas on the 24th instead of the 25th: It's a really busy time for us around Christmas time. We spend all night partying over with Juan's family until midnight and then have to wake up around 7 or so...open presents and then spend the rest of the day with my family. They wait until midnight to open their gifts.

2. Mi familia likes to eat mayo on their corn on the cob: I have never ever seen this before. It was only ever butter in my family but they love it! Especially Juan who will put spice on top of the mayo.

3. Mi familia doesn't have a dishwasher: When I met my husband, he didn't know what the dishwasher was when we moved into our first apartment. Before you say "WHA?! Who doesn't know what that is?!" let me tell you that his family doesn't have one in their house. Everything was cleaned in the sink. So while it's different, it's just the way he grew up.

4. You better come to mi familia's house hungry: If you come full...they are going to try to feed you anyway. I love my mother in law's food though so I don't mind it!

5. Mi familia eats chile on EVERYTHING: Meat, sides, fruit, veggies, candy...the spicier the better for them! Juan can't go too far without his Valentina sauce.

6. For Pinata time at a birthday party...mi familia makes a way to put it up in the air. Be it on the roof or  on top of the truck...it's going to get up there.

7. It is nice to be helpful: I still need to work on this, but it's always looked up on when the younger ladies help out the mother of their loved ones. There are times where I clean up after we eat or have made dinner for them all and it feels good to help.

8. Mi familia loves to party: If there is music...and beer...and food...and dancing- they are there! I always have a good time partying at their get togethers. It can be either just for fun or for something important and they last a long time...be sure you are going to sleep in afterwards.

9. Mi familia answers the phone with "Bueno" instead of hello: I'm still not sure why exactly...but if it's not broke, don't fix it.

There are so many more...and believe me, I'll put it here. I'm still eager to find out more about Juan's culture through him and his family. My learning is still ongoing!

To-Know-Me Tuesday: Favorite Foods- Round One

There is no doubt that I love food. I love to eat it...to study it...to smell it. I'm not too picky; there are few foods that I will absolutely not eat but other than that I am pretty much open. For this week's To-Know-Me, I'm going to list some of my favorite foods to eat. Because, come on...who doesn't love food and especially good food! If this list doesn't make you hungry...then I haven't done my job right.

1. Nachos: I love to eat either the nachos from Chillis with steak on top or Mucho Nachos from Taco Bueno. I also just like making some with ground beef, Velveta and tomatoes when I'm making some at home.

2. Salad: My whole family loves eating salads. My mom is known for eating her spinach salads with grapes and chicken. Me myself...I love either a simple green salad with chicken and cheese with ranch or even just one with cucumbers and tomatoes. At restaurants I usually eat club salads.

3.  Chicken Alfredo: This dish is quite possibly one of my all time favorites to chow down on! There is something about the creamy cheese sauce that just makes me squee happily. Add some chicken and I'm down! We eat this a lot at my house. The best restaurant one to me is the Seafood Alfredo at Olive Garden.

4. Pears: I only have a few favorite fruits and it's come a long way from my kiddy favorite, cherries. Now my all time favorite fruit are pears. At first I didn't really care what pears I ate, just as long as I had some. But starting in 2012, I started buying Bartlett pears and haven't turned back. They are the juiciest sweetest pears I've ever tasted, with just a hint of tang in them. They come in red and green but I'm more used to buying the green ones.

5. Ramen: This is something that everybody must have eaten at least once in their lifetime. If not...it's pretty yummy. I have eaten this since I can remember and I still love it just as much. My favorite flavors are Shrimp, Pork and Chicken. The rare ones I eat from time to time are Oriental and Creamy Chicken.

6. Cake: My top favorite food though tied with ramen. I love red velvet, vanilla, strawberry, funfetti...but my all time favorite cake is yellow cake with chocolate frosting. It reminds me of my Nanny who used to make it for us all the time. I like to make cakes at home now, but I have yet to learn how to make two layer cakes.

7. Barbacoa: I have to admit...before I met Juan I had no idea what the hell barbacoa even was. One time he took me to a Mexican marketplace and we ate from a food truck called Glory's. That was my first heavenly taste of the barbacoa along with my first taste of the drink Jarritos. Both were excellent and now I love love love it when either he or my in laws get me some.

8. Avocado: Along with barbacoa...I hadn't really eaten a lot of avocado before Juan either, but now we make it a part of our diets a lot. I love how buttery it tastes and how soft it feels. It's a bit messy to prepare and sometimes...it irritates my throat but still...can't eat Mexican foods without it.

9. Pancakes: Yes Yes and Yes...I could eat pancakes all day long if given the chance and not having the worry of being fat. My dad used to make pancakes all the time. I even craved pancakes when I was pregnant with Sofia. Even she loves them. That's my kid! In IHOP I always go for the New York Cheesecake Pancakes

10. Jack's Brunch Burger: My final one of this round of course has to be the fattiest burger around...but I love it so much. I'm quite fond of the munchie meals that come only at 9 and later at Jack and the Box and for a change of pace I got this burger. It was good...I'm all for breakfast burgers...but the thing that got me was that it was a burger...like beef with all the breakfast stuff...even hash brows. I still crave that thing sometimes!

Wow...all of these food have made me hungry and I haven't even eaten yet! For now I have to settle for spaghetti with sausage in it, but sooner or later I will have one of these! Anybody have any favorite foods to share? Link to them here! I can't wait to see what you guys love to chow down on!

To Pull the Plug or Not- A Tough Decision

I found out that there was a legal situation from the hospital that I used to work at. The situation was that there was a mother that was 14 weeks pregnant that had a blood clot to the brain and was proclaimed brain dead. The family wanted to take the mother off of life support, but the hospital said that it was against the law to because of the baby still inside of her. There was a huge fight between the hospital and the family and it resulted in a judge telling the hospital to pull the plug on the mother. The family won the case. Good for them...but it got me thinking.

What if it was me?

I guess it would have depended on certain things. Like the length of pregnancy. This woman was 14 weeks along...she still had a lot more pregnancy life time left to go. There was no way she could get good nutrients to the baby or prenatal vitamins. If it was me and I had died at that time with the baby inside me then yes, I would want Juan to take me off life support. It would have been a really hard time for that baby if not formed right.

Now...if I was lets say 8 or 9 months pregnant when this happened then I would want Juan to keep me alive for that time if the baby was alive, kicking and healthy. This I know for sure.

I'm so sorry for the family to have to go through all of that; to see their loved one just wasting away because of the baby they didn't know yet. I'm so sorry for the husband to have to deal with the horror of this situation. I just hope that they have the peace that they have been searching for though this.

It's amazing how life works...how rough it is...and the pain it puts people through.

Simply amazing.

Here is more on the story: here

Our Kingdom is Sickly...

It has been nothing but coughing and sneezing and runny noses here in our house for the past two weeks. The pollen of the mountain cedar is going all around North Texas and it's driving me, Sofia and my mom crazy!

I'm so tired of the itchy eyes, ears and throat and so tired of wiping Sofia's constantly runny nose over and over all day long.

I've tried everything for her: Benedryl, Claritin, Hylands...but nothing is working. I might have to call her pediatrician and see what she can do for her to give her some relief. As for me, I need to get some Allegra. Something that will keep me awake and still battle my allergies.

My mom is worse than me...with her asthma and all. She's been coughing a lot more than both of us. But it's running it's course. Juan is starting to get more sick...now the allergies are bothering him now. Blegh...I can't wait for this allergy season to go away. Give us some relief!

Something Snapped Session # 2- Ruben Ortiz and Bianca Olivo

Yes I know it's not baseball season yet but who could resist a picture like this? I had been wanting to take pictures of my brother in law and his girlfriend for a long long time; they are the cutest couple. From their playful bantering to just all out fuzzy wuzzy loving, it's clear to see that they are so in love with each other. I was very happy with the way their pictures came out.

ETA: And guess what?! They actually ended up getting engaged a month after this photoshoot! Maybe another one soon?

Something Snapped Session #1- Eric Phillips

Look at this beauty of a pic! It's on one of many that I took of my cousin Eric yesterday afternoon. I have been wanting to build up a portfolio before I start getting my feet on the ground for the business and Eric happily agreed to be my model of sorts. We went to downtown Fort Worth to get some photos taken and he was a natural at poses. I barely had to tell him pose anywhere! The pics turned out amazing and it really boosted up my courage to keep going at this. He was happy with them too and wants to get some printed out. I'm like "Yeah! Let's do it!"

Now today I'm going to be taking pictures of my brother in law Ruben with his girlfriend Bianca. It's my first time taking couples pictures so we'll be doing it at a baseball field as they both love baseball. I have some ideas in my brain but we'll see how it goes. If I can keep at this...Something Snapped can become a reality.

Confessional Friday

Confessional Friday time! I'm getting this from Leslie who has quite an awesome blog! If  you are interested in a blog that has style along with family lifestyle head over there and check her out. She's great from what I've read so far.

1. I confess that I haven't cleaned my whole house yet. I mean...what's the point? I deep clean something only to have my curious kitten of a daughter go and mess it up again. It's so so very tiring. Maybe this weekend I can fit in some time to really clean.

2. I confess that I really don't want to get a job yet. I'm happy being at home with Sofia and wish that Juan's job paid him better. But at the same time I really do need some money so it's definitely time.

3. I confess that I am seriously tired of the tree pollen that is flying around. It is dealing us a heap of trouble. Mom is hacking and coughing, I'm sneezing and Sofia's runny nose has been leaking non-stop. The only one who's fine is Juan. Lucky him and his lack of allergies.

4. I confess that I am impatient about the lack of people following me on my blog and also how slow my photography plans are going. I know I've only been blogging seriously for pretty much a month, but I really want to show off my life to people for them to enjoy. As for photography, I need to plan a little better with it. Find pricing that work for me and everybody else.

5. I confess that I am so happy no excited that Sofia is going to my aunts house tonight. I love my little munchkin with all my heart, but sometimes I just need that time alone to get stuff done. If I don't get my house clean while she is away for the night, I will be so disappointed.

The Queen is Being Put to Work?

I got a phone call on Tuesday from Office Team, the temp agency that I'm a part of and they had a position for me to work at for a care loan agency. If I get this job, I'll be working in the mailroom. At first I was kind of disappointed because I really was looking for more of a receptionist position, but I know that I do need some kind of money to help with Juan and the bills and also to buy new stuff for us and the home. I got dressed up on Wednesday and headed to the interview for the company. It was a little bit of a wait for the interview to begin but when I got in and met the interviewer, I realized that even though it would be a fast paced job, that the dress code would be casual which is great for me; I don't have many stylish clothes just yet in my closet. They asked me questions and I answered after which I asked them my own questions.

I still do want to pursue my photography business and getting this job might make it a bit harder since I have to get my license during the day. Maybe during a lunch break? Truth is...I really want to have a job that I can be successful in while having fun. Photography or writing would be my dream jobs. I have to work hard to get to those though and I will. This job will just keep us happy until that time comes.

I got to keep a open mind...this will happen in my life.

How the Royal Family Began...

Once upon a time...there was little ol' me. I stayed with my mother in her one story apartment and was just starting a new job at a hospital as a Patient Transporter. I moved out of her house and into my dad's house where there was more space. So I didn't have a life of my own just yet nor a guy in my life and I really didn't expect to have one. At work though, I started catching the eyes of a few guys but it didn't really work out with them. Also my co-workers were trying hard to play matchmaker for me-irritating but it really didn't matter. Juan was also in my department as a transporter.

I met him while I was being trained by a co-worker and he was training another new employee as well. We said our hellos but didn't really say anything else. I remember seeing him one time while we were all just waiting for jobs and saw him chatting with his friend Efren. I was then blown away by his beautiful smile. It was big and wide and just full of happiness. That was the first attraction I had toward him but it didn't grow just yet. Now in the hospital, there were a lot of Hispanic people that we had to drop off and pick up, so there was quite a language barrier. So I decided to ask Juan to teach me to speak Spanish so that it would be easier to talk to the patients. He immediately said yes and we started our lessons. It was hilarious because he would say a sentence and I would be like "Huh? Say wut now?" cause he would say it so fast or he would say something else and I would say "What does it start with?" Haha...fun times. The first sentence he taught me was "necisito un guante grande." which translated to "I need a large glove." Yes, random...but I was happy I even said it!

As I would learn more words, I found myself hanging out more and more with this cool dude and knew I was falling for him, but at the time he was kind of talking to somebody so I didn't really push it. Also he was quiet person and I was so afraid of rejection. I mean...I was so close to writing one of those school type of notes that said, "Do you like me? Check yes or no." I also grabbed his number. I made it seem like it was for more Spanish lessons, but it was really to talk to him more. To this day Juan tells me it was a smooth move. :P

It was after he appeared in my dream that I knew that I liked him for real. So while at work I told a co-worker of mine, Eboni that I liked Juan. You know what she did? Set him and I up on a blind date...except she told me about it. So of course I had to tell him. It just seemed more fair that way.

So we ended up having a great date at Chilli's and he came to my family's talent show. We afterwards started going on more and more dates. Our first kiss was like something out of middle school, I but I didn't care. It was greatness! He asked me to be his girlfriend on January 1, 2010. A fresh new relationship for a new year is what he wanted. I accepted and on that same day met the awesome family that would be my inlaws. I had always been so interested in the Hispanic culture and so with them, I was submerged in it. It was great and he was amazing. We would go out and with that learn so much more about each other and our lives. I introduced him to different foods and places and he showed me different spanish foods and areas. I was so in love with him.

The first picture we took as a couple.

We even decided to go out of the country together for vacation. We went to Jamaica for my 25th birthday. A big step for both of us because we had never been to another country before. He took care of all expenses and all we had to do was pay for gifts and food. I had never had a man do that for me before.

We spent the majority of the time in hotels (out of respect really...I lived with my dad and he lived with his parents so we didn't want to have private time there) and it got to the point were we were seeing each other all the time. Weekends and whatnot. I was already planning on leaving my hell hole of a home and asked Angel if he wanted to move in together. It took some persuasion but finally he agreed.

We moved into our first apartment together on the 5th of November. It was an awesome journey really. We got to learn more about each other, our likes and dislikes, we pissed each other off from time to time but all in all we loved living in our apartment. People were starting to ask though about where our future was taking us. If we were getting married. We really didn't know; we were together living in the apartment more than 6 months so practically in the state of TX we were married anyway. But it didn't feel the same as actually getting the papers!

Well, in August 2011, I quit my job because I had a feeling that I was pregnant. I didn't want to stress out if that were the case. It turns out that I was and because of that, Angel decided that he wanted to find a house. We knew we couldn't live in a apartment and save up money to buy a house, so his parents graciously allowed us to move back in with them until we got our path together.

We decided to get married and tied the knot on November 4, 2011. I was four months pregnant with Sofia but was still a beautiful bride. It was a small ceremony at the courthouse and a small get together at the house with his family and mine. Hopefully in the future we can have a huge vow renewal and that will be the wedding I always wanted.

It's a challenge...being married, but I wouldn't want to take it with any other man.
